Southampton Post Offices History

The Bean's Cove Post Office was established on May 27, 1872, with William Donahue as the Postmaster. Thomas Donahue took over on December 1, 1894, when the name was changed to Beans Cove. The Beans Cove Post Office was closed on May 31, 1906, when the mail went to Flintstone, Maryland.

The Chaneysville Post Office was opened on July 13, 1855, with Alexander Fletcher as the Postmaster. It closed on September 6, 1858, only to reopen on September 24, 1860, with John H.P. Adams as Postmaster. The Post Office was in a small building on the corner near where the stop sign is today. It was closed forever on November 15, 1938, when the mail for our Township was delivered by the Post Office in Flintstone, Maryland. The Flintstone Post Office delivered the mail until the late 1970's. Today Beans Cove and Chaneysville mail come through the Clearville, Pennsylvania Post Office.

About eight miles south of Chaneysville is the Hewitt Post Office/store that is still standing at the intersection. The Hewitt Post Office was established on May 28, 1897, and was opened until May 31, 1907, with Postmaster Arthur McElfish. An interesting note . . . between February 9 and May 28, 1897, the Post Office was originally established as McElfish! After three short months, McElfish became Hewitt. Between the Post Office and the Hewitt covered bridge stood the McElfish's gristmill. The Mason-Dixon line is not far away.

The Elbinsville Post Office served this sparsely settled area which today borders Mann Township. The Post Office was in a small building at the intersection of Elbinsville Road. William Lashley was Postmaster from May 7, 1852, to September 1, 1879. He sent the mail to Chaneysville. On January 21, 1880, mail service was re-established by David Tewell. On December 30, 1922, the mail was routed to Flintstone, Maryland. Today this area is serviced by Artemas, Pennsylvania. The rest of our township is part of the Clearville Post Office are with the exception of a short route coming out of Everett.
